Hells Half Acre, Idaho { 36 images } Created 24 May 2022

Hell’s Half Acre is a massive volcanic landscape found on the Snake River Plain in eastern Idaho. With much of it contained within 66,000 acres designated as a wilderness study area, the feature contains few hiking trails. One, a lengthy and primitive hiking trail guided by posts, is found on the northern end, while two shorter and maintained trails are found along the southern end via I-15 pullouts. The former hike leads to a large lava vent, where the violent past becomes glaringly obvious through sharp rocks and lava flows. The latter trails will allow hikers to see a several-thousand year-old lava flow over the course of a mile, allowing weary drivers the chance to get out and see a remarkable landscape and awe-inspiring geology.
